Bishop Sutton Tennis Club Newsletter – April 2019
Easter bank holiday and what weather, perfect for getting the racquet out and running the kids or your partner ragged around the courts.
There are a few things to update you on so here goes:
Wimbledon Draw – next Sunday 28th April 4pm to 5pm in the clubhouse. The chance to win one of 39 pairs of Wimbledon tickets that the club has been awarded by the LTA. Remember you must have been registered as an LTA British Tennis Member and you have to have paid your subscription for the year. For those not able to attend you can appoint a proxy to choose your slot if your name comes out of the hat. Proxy forms in the clubhouse or available from SJ (sjsj246@gmail.com).
Annual Membership Due – well it was due on 1st March 2019! For those who have not yet renewed please either do so or let Claire (allenfamily.2109@googlemail.com) know if you are not joining so she can stop chasing you. Every year we are amazed if not a little depressed at how much chasing Claire has to do to get the membership set up – if you are joining then join, if you are not then let her know – simples!
Chew Valley School Courts (CVS) – as of 1st April 2019 the club has signed a 20-year licence for the use of the school courts outside school hours and in the holidays. Why not go and give them a try, they really are as good as our hard courts at BSTC. Nicely refurbished courts with new nets and posts. You can book them on Club Spark; they are imaginatively named CVS1 to CVS 4. When you book you will get an email confirmation with the code for the gate. The same code will give you access to the changing rooms accessed from the pathway between the courts and the sports hall, if the sports hall is not open. Our access is via the gate to the court which is at the road side end to the right as you look at the sports hall; it has a keypad style lock. The floodlights are to be installed at the end of May and we expect to be able to use them by mid-June, just in time for the longest day!
Annual General Meeting – this will be held after the Wimbledon Draw next Sunday in the clubhouse. Our club is a member’s club, which means it is run by members for members. We are always looking for new additions to the Committee or just expressions of help, so don’t be shy come forward. It really is good fun (honest ask my committee!!) being part of the club functions and good for the soul as you are helping your local community. For the eagle eyed although the agenda is up, we are yet to get the accounts signed off but they will be on the club website under News tab by end of the week coming.
Great British Tennis Weekend – this year we will taking the opportunity to use the CVS courts as the location, this will also mark the “opening” of the courts. It will be held on Sunday the 19th May 2019 between 11am and 2pm, we will do the usual fun events on court plus have a BBQ and cakes and things. GLL, the operator of the other sports facilities on site will also be holding an open day so you can also get some taster sessions with them. Please come and support the event and if you are able to then please lend a hand in the setup. (Offers of help to: tonkin.dj@gmail.com).
Barn Dance – fun for all the family! We are holding a barn dance in the Bishop Sutton Hall on Saturday 29th June from 7pm featuring a great band (Rapscallion) and some fine eats (vegetarian or carnivore) from our very own Jane Fowler. Mark is now taking bookings, one free place for every table of eight booked (adult £20, under 18, £10) booked before 1st May 2019, but smaller bookings also accommodated. Places are going fast with all ready 60% sold. Mark Hunter on: mhunter@hunteraccountants.co.uk
Summer League Match Season 2019 – the match season starts on 10th May and runs through to July 19th. If you are interested in playing and want to find out more then contact either Lyn on: florincottage@gmail.com or David on: tonkin.dj@gmail.com
Club Tournament 2019 – the club tournaments have been automated! Go to website and pick the tab “Events” and enter the tournaments that you wish to. Note if you are booking for two people or more you will have to do each person separately, coming in and out of the event for each person. Where it asks for team name on doubles entries just put in the name of person you are entering. Lyn will be sending out more detailed booking instructions on Monday coming. The finals day is Sunday 8th September with earlier rounds scheduled throughout the summer. This is great way to meet other members of the club and enjoy the tension of a knockout tournament.
Security – please if you are the last one at the club ensure the clubhouse door is shut and the latch has engaged – be aware the door can appear closed but it is not. Also check that the courts are locked. Thankyou
